Fighting Fake News

George Town, 6 August 2019 – Secondary schools which want to help their students learn how to spot fake news will get a helping hand from UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College.

UOW Malaysia KDU Penang’s Department of Mass Communication accepts invitations from school counsellors or any interested party to conduct its “Fight Fake News” workshop to secondary school students, particularly those between 15 and 19 years old, to make them into more media literate individuals.

The workshop aims to cultivate habits of checking and verifying news before sharing and disseminating them. It furnishes participants with knowledge on how to identify and report fake news. The workshop includes an interactive activity where students were given controversial news published in the media and were then told to guess the authenticity of news.

The workshop lasts three hours and the first one was held on the UOW Malaysia KDU Penang campus in Anson Road, George Town, for 54 students of SMK Pinji, Ipoh, on July 6.

Fake news is defined as stories that appear to be news, spread on the internet or other media with the intention of influencing the public or as a joke.  Though the term is not a new, it was highly popularised by American President Donald Trump in 2016 when misinformation spread like wildfire during the US’ presidential election season.

Today, fake news is everywhere, especially on social media. Various recent studies show that the younger generation, especially teenagers, are more likely to spread fake or fabricated news which are appealing to them without checking the authenticity.
